The Three Blackbirds pub was closed when The Chestnut Group acquired the property in Autumn 2016. The pub was re-opened in March 2017 as The Blackbirds Inn. We believe a public house has been on this site since the mid seventeenth century - we have some history to live up to!
Woodditton is geographically positioned next to Newmarket (3 miles away) and has historically forged close links with the racing fraternity - being home to many studs, Woodditton Stud was founded in 1851. The pub became a favourite haunt for jockeys, particularly Lester Piggott who insisted on many of his interviews being conducted over lunch at the pub!
The pub has always been very dog friendly, particularly as it is located next to Devil’s Dyke. This is an impressive earthwork which stretches seven miles from Woodditton to Reach – now a very popular walk. It was built in the Dark Ages (6th century), to keep out marauding Mercians! In more modern times (2nd World War) a 300yard section of the Dyke was removed to ensure that heavily laden bombers (taking off from Newmarket Heath) did not crash into it! These days our priority is to ensure that we have refreshments in place for weary walkers that have completed the 7mile trip!
We are midway through another chapter in the history of this fabulous building – sadly The Blackbirds Inn suffered a devastating fire in March 2018. The pub’s status as a Grade II listed building demanded extensive discussions with the Heritage Department at East Cambs Council – thankfully we are on the way to recovery!
When The Blackbirds Inn returns, it will once again be the historic pub with low beams, roaring log fires, a dedicated bar area, a private dining area for up to 20 people – and nine newly constructed bedrooms. The Inn will be open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The seasonal menu is inspired by local stories from suppliers.
We will have an extensive range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks – ranging from locally brewed beers, locally distilled gins to Kenyan coffee, where we actively support the building of a new school for the village.
The Blackbirds Inn plays an active role in the village community.
